4 Essential Design Tips for Display Banners

Display Banner Design Tips to Wow Your Customer and Persuade Them to Click the Ad

As a business owner, you're always looking for new ways to attract new customers. And a business in today’s world, you know you have to be advertising your business online someway, somehow. One of those somehows is through display advertising.

Display Advertising is best for building awareness and keeping your business top of mind with prospective customers.

Successful display advertising proactively targets new customers by placing relevant banner ads and messages in front of them when they’re more likely to be interested and click through to your site.

Do people notice your banner ads when they’re online?

Google Display Ads appear on over three million websites. It isn't enough to simply list your company name on a banner and call it a day. Your display banners are one of the first impressions a potential customer has to being introduced to your business.

The best way to stand out is to have an ad worth looking at!

Good banner design consists of fundamental structure, a great offer, strong images and a solid CTA.

So, where to start?

Let’s Get Fundamental

In order for your ads to be eligible to show on Google, they must meet the platform’s design specification and technical requirements – this includes specific sizes, file types and guidelines issued by the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau).

But what else does your display banner need? The basis of a good banner is structure. A solid banner structure allows your designs to fit the top performing Google Ad sizes and allows for the flexibility to be shown on different sized screens.

The fundamental elements every display ad should contain:

1. Your logo or company name (required by Google)

2. A value proposition

3. An image or visual representation of your service

4. A CTA button (required by Google)

Value Proposition & CTA

What does your customer get from your company that makes their life better? Is it comfy shoes? Or fresh food delivered to their door?

Your value proposition and CTA are one of the most important elements of your banner. A value proposition is what informs users why they should become your customer rather than your competitor’s, it is what will get your customers to click on the banner and CTA and take a look at the product on your website.

You want to make the value proposition that your company offers the highlight of the banner. You have something, and they want it. You just need to show them that they want it.

You don't need to get bogged down in the details or full, grammatically correct sentences. The value proposition needs to grab their attention and start the customer thinking about buying it from your business.

It's beneficial for the offer to catch the person's eye first, but you definitely don't want them to miss it in a jungle of text and images.

Keep your value proposition as a simple message to encourage your audience to click through to your website.

Once the user is on your website, well that is half the battle. Ensuring your website is working to return sales and enquiries from your digital marketing campaigns is essential (One company found that optimising its landing page CTA led to an eye-popping 245% increase in leads).

Image or Visual Representation of Your Business

People shop and buy with all of their senses, including sight. With this in mind, it's time to think about images or a visual representation of your company and industry. This artwork should be something simple but powerful.  It can be anything from a solid brand colour, an eye-catching background or images.

Images should capture the products and services that you provide and make them look appealing to your customers, to inspire the buyer to click on your banner and visit your website.

Ready to get cracking? Here are a few additional banner design tips to get you started:

Design Elements to Consider

There are many elements that go into designing a banner that grabs your customers' attention and draws them in. Here are a few design elements to keep in mind while you're designing your new banners.

Typography

Can you read it? If the creativity bug struck, you may use a font you've never used before now. It's a good idea to print out a mock copy of the banner and hang it on your computer. Step back and make sure that everything you want to see is easy to read and that the eye is naturally drawn to it.

Imagery

You want your potential customers to see your banner and immediately recognise any images. After you're done creating your banner, you want to ensure that the images are clear and well-defined. Are these images that will appeal to your customer base?

Colours

You want your colours to pop and attract the eye. It's a good idea to go with bright colours. However, you need to double-check that the colours complement each other, and the ones used in the images or your company logo. Remember that colours can affect a buyer's mood and emotions.

Branding

Your new banner is representing your brand, and you want that to jump off the webpage at customers. You wouldn't put images of a house if you sell shoes. When designing your banner, keep your brand front and centre in your creative process.
